A safari in Tanzania National Park means:

What is a game drive?

Safaris often involve long game drives, where guests can spend 6 to 8 hours in a safari vehicle to view animals, especially in parks where you can’t leave the car except in designated areas.

Some guests prefer early morning game drives, leaving at sunrise to spot elusive animals like cheetahs, and then returning to the lodge earlier in the day to enjoy a swim or a relaxing hike before the evening.

There’s no rule saying you have to stay in the park until closing time. National parks are open from 6 am to 6 pm, and you’re free to come and go within those hours.

You don’t have to spend all day in the car. Most lodges are located within or near national parks, so with a longer safari itinerary, you can enjoy the comforts of luxury accommodations throughout the day. Some lodges even have waterholes nearby, attracting animals right to your terrace, bringing the safari experience to you.

Since safaris often involve long hours in a vehicle, it’s important to consider how well young children can handle the journey. While safaris are exciting and offer plenty to see—animals, birds, and unique wildlife—it can be tiring for younger travelers who may not be able to sit for long stretches.

Also, time moves differently on safari. A morning spent in Tarangire National Park, following a herd of elephants, will be thrilling. Your heart will race when you spot a lion just meters away, and you’ll marvel at the height of a giraffe or try to get the perfect shot of a leopard in a tree. Before you know it, it’s time for lunch. Your driver will take you to a scenic picnic spot, often overlooking a lake or with a stunning view of the park, where you can enjoy a meal outside of the safari car.

Manyara National Park has recently constructed a series of connected bridges in the strong trees along Lake Manyara, allowing for a unique ‘Tree Top Walk’ to get even closer to the incredible birdlife of this park.

Tarangire National Park has one of the largest populations of elephants in the region, visitors are sure to see elephant families with young babies in this park. During the dry season, herds of zebras and wildebeests, and their predators – lions, cheetahs and leopards – make their way to Tarangire for its large river, as a source of water.

Arusha National Park is home to the iconic Mount Meru, the second-highest peak in Tanzania. Guests can experience a walking safari through the grasslands and get close to giraffes, zebras and herds of Cape Buffalo, all under the guidance of a professional park ranger, of course.
